Ukraine Update: the Church is Still Standing

Across Ukraine, evangelical churches have become anchors in their communities, offering shelter, prayer, emotional care, and practical support to families affected by war. Pastors and volunteer leaders are exhausted, yet they continue to serve faithfully. In many places, the local church has become the place people run toward in moments of fear and uncertainty.

And through these same local churches, Tomorrow Clubs continue to meet. In fact, despite the war, the ministry has grown to more than 500 clubs across Ukraine, including in some front-line areas. Children are still hearing the Gospel, still praying, still learning to follow Jesus amid grief, disruption, and loss. Not through loud triumphalism or easy answers, but through quiet, steady faithfulness. In basements, classrooms, homes, and candlelit rooms without electricity, children are discovering that even in suffering, they are not alone.

Hope is still taking root.

A Question No Child Should Have to Ask

Last month, a 9-year-old girl walked into a Tomorrow Club after losing her father on the front lines of the war. For three weeks, she barely spoke. She simply sat quietly and listened.

Then one day, during a lesson about God’s presence in suffering, she looked up and asked:

“Was God with my dad when he was dying?”

That moment captures what so many children in Ukraine are carrying right now: deep grief, fear, confusion, and questions no child should have to wrestle with alone. And yet, local churches continue to show up, not with simple answers, but with compassion, presence, and the hope of Christ.

When the Lights Go Out, Ministry Continues

This past winter, one Tomorrow Club faced a freezing evening without electricity or heat. Canceling seemed like the responsible thing to do.

But the children had already gathered outside the door. So the leaders lit candles. Someone brought thermoses of tea. In the dim light, they sang quietly together.

Then a little boy said something that stopped everyone in the room:

“I’m not afraid here.”

In that moment, the leaders realized something important: Tomorrow Club is no longer just a weekly program. For many children, it has become a place of safety in a world that no longer feels secure.

Families are Being Drawn in

When air-raid alerts made larger gatherings impossible, some clubs began meeting in small home mini-clubs across different neighborhoods. What started as a temporary solution became something unexpectedly meaningful. The smaller settings created deeper conversations, stronger relationships, and more personal discipleship.

For many families, fear has become part of daily life. But the deeper struggle now is exhaustion, emotional fatigue, and learning how to keep going through prolonged uncertainty. Tomorrow Clubs are helping children do more than simply escape for an hour. They are learning how to bring their fears, pain, and questions honestly before God, without pretending everything is okay.

Even in the exhaustion of war, we continue to see signs of spiritual growth. Children are beginning to pray in their own words. Parents who once only dropped off their children are now staying to listen and participate.

One mother shared:

“At first, I brought my son. Now I come for myself, because I need this too.”

One teenager recently shared:

“I hated everyone. But here, I prayed for people I thought were my enemies.”

We do not romanticize suffering. War is evil, and loss is real. But even in the middle of devastation, we are witnessing what only God can do: soften hearts, plant forgiveness, and form disciples in places marked by pain. Again and again, we see how the Gospel reaches entire families through children.

Strengthening the Church for Tomorrow

Tomorrow Clubs continue to serve as a bridge between local churches and children who might otherwise never enter a church building. We are not replacing the local church. We are strengthening its mission.

Again and again, we see the same pattern: children come to the club, parents begin to follow, families connect to the church, and communities begin to change. That is not marketing. That is discipleship.

Looking Ahead with Hope

Even now, the Ukraine team continues to dream, plan, and prepare for the future. They are training new leaders, expanding trauma-aware care for children affected by war, and building toward future restoration opportunities for families carrying years of hardship.

The war has not stopped the vision. If anything, it has made the mission clearer.
